Blessed Urban V, pope at Avignon (+ 1370)

It was a French pope in Avignon , and one of the Avignon popes to have been beatified.

Grimoard William, abbot of St. Victor of Marseilles, was elected pope in 1362. He was chosen out of the Sacred College. He enjoyed a reputation perfect or was regarded by many as a holy man. Of noble family from Lozère (he was born in 1310 in Grizac), William was a brilliant servant of the Church, he began to Clement VI and Innocent VI of delicate missions in Italy. He chose the name of Urban V, in reference to the city of Rome (urbs is the nickname of Rome, it means "the City" in Latin).

Previously, he went to Montpellier, taught there and became a renowned specialist of law. He was received a doctorate in 1342. He was still in this city when the plague spread of 1348.

Later he was appointed prior to the diocese of Auxerre. February 13, 1352, Pope Clement VI, placed him at the head of the Abbey of Saint-Germain of Auxerre and Innocent VI appointed him abbot of St. Victor, Marseilles Westminster Abbey, 2 February 1361, after the death of Etienne de Clapier. In all its expenses, it said "holy man moult and beautiful life, a great scholar and moult had worked for the Church."

After his election, Pope buckled the daunting task of reforming the morals of the Church. The queen of Naples and the King of France Jean asked her advice and assistance. He tried to put up with it a crusade, failed to King's death.

Pope Urban V tried to rid the Provence of Great Companies. He managed to send them to fight in Spain, but had to pay to their chief Bertrand du Guesclin a considerable sum.

In September 1366, Urban V decided to return to Rome, to the chagrin of French and Avignon. He left Avignon, 30 April 1367 and entered Rome in jubilation after October 16. The joy of the return did not last long. French and Italian cardinals were torn, insecurity spread, Perugia revolted, Bernabo Visconti of Milan plundered Tuscany. Urban V, isolated in Rome, decided to return to Avignon in September 1370. He died Dec. 19 of that year in the palace.

During his pontificate, the work and character of Urban V made unanimously. Her courageous return to Rome was aborted but the return the sovereign pontiff in the Eternal City was only a matter of time.
